What is Advanced Pulmonary Function Testing?
Advanced (full) pulmonary function testing combines spirometry with measurement of lung volumes and diffusion capacity. It provides a detailed picture of whether a breathing problem is due to narrowed airways (obstruction), stiff or small lungs (restriction) or impaired oxygen transfer.
Why it is done
- Unexplained breathlessness
- Interstitial lung disease
- Pre-operative assessment for lung surgery
- Neuromuscular and chest wall disorders
Before the procedure
- Avoid smoking for at least 24 hours (ideally longer) before the test
- Avoid heavy meals and vigorous exercise shortly before the test
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing
- You may be asked to withhold certain inhalers before the test — follow the instructions you are given
During the procedure
- A combination of breathing manoeuvres guided by a technician
- May take 45–60 minutes
After the procedure
- Normal activities can be resumed immediately
