What is Inhaler Technique Assessment & Counselling?

Many people use their inhalers incorrectly without realising it, which means less medicine reaches the lungs. Inhaler counselling checks your technique step by step with your own device, corrects common errors, and helps choose the device best suited to your breathing strength, coordination and preferences — metered-dose inhaler with spacer, dry powder inhaler or nebuliser.

Why it is done

  • Starting a new inhaler
  • Asthma or COPD that is not well controlled
  • Switching between inhaler devices
  • Children, older adults or anyone finding inhalers difficult

Before the procedure

  • Bring all the inhalers and spacers you currently use

During the procedure

  • You demonstrate your technique and receive step-by-step feedback
  • Training devices may be used for practice
  • Advice on spacers, mouth rinsing after steroid inhalers, and device care

After the procedure

  • Technique is re-checked at follow-up visits
  • Written or video reminders may be provided
