Spirometry is a simple breathing test that measures how much air you can blow out of your lungs and how quickly. It takes around 15–20 minutes and gives objective information that symptoms alone cannot.
Why it matters
- It confirms the diagnosis of COPD and supports the diagnosis of asthma
- It helps distinguish airway narrowing from stiff or small lungs
- It measures disease severity and tracks response to treatment
- It can detect lung problems before symptoms become severe
Preparing for the test
Avoid smoking and heavy meals beforehand, wear loose clothing, and follow any instructions about pausing inhalers. The test requires effort but is not painful.
