What is CPAP / BiPAP Evaluation & Titration?
CPAP and BiPAP machines deliver pressurised air through a mask to keep the airway open during sleep or to support breathing. A titration study — performed in the sleep lab or with an auto-adjusting device — finds the pressure that best controls your breathing events. Mask fitting and follow-up are essential for comfort and long-term success.
Why it is done
- Diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea
- Obesity hypoventilation syndrome
- Selected patients with COPD and high carbon dioxide levels
- Neuromuscular conditions affecting breathing
Before the procedure
- The same preparation as a sleep study
- You will be shown how the device and mask work before you sleep
During the procedure
- You sleep wearing the mask
- Pressure is gradually adjusted to eliminate apneas, snoring and oxygen drops
After the procedure
- A prescription for pressure settings and mask type
- Follow-up to review device data and comfort
Safety & risks
CPAP/BiPAP is safe. Common initial issues include mask discomfort, dryness or nasal congestion, which can usually be resolved with adjustments.
Preparation instructions may differ for individual patients — please follow the specific advice given at your consultation.
